Nuisance Call
The reward offer is a scam, to make you pay money in advance. The offered gifts may never arrive or may be worthless. In the process of payment, your credit card data could be stolen too!
In another scenario, you may be asked to call back and asked to register for a Timeshare / travel club sales presentation and forced to sign up for an expensive but substandard scheme. (To herd people into the convention hall, scammer would inform them that the free gift will be handed over at the convention)
When you call back, you may be prompted to enter the parcel number (to make it look legit) and then you are asked to confirm that you are not single, have income above a threshold and have at least one major credit card. At the sales presentation, couples are played one against the other. (“Looks like your husband can’t afford to buy you a vacation!”) Many feel humiliated and harassed in front of their partner and end up sighing up for expensive (often worthless) timeshare, after planning to attend only for the sake of collecting the “free gift”
If you receive a letter or post card suspected to be scam, do report to the US Postal Service Inspectors at spostalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx
