Extortion Scam
Whether you have an debt or not NEVER admit debt over phone to strangers. You do not have to give any information to anyone, unless you are 100% certain who the other party is.
This is precisely the reason why, it's mandatory under law for a debt collector or a lender to send a notice by post, identifying himself with details of the alleged debt.
Never engage in talk with debt collectors. Instead ask them to send a notice. Period.
Also take care NOT to share address or bank account details, phone numbers of self or relatives with people who call. You do not have to, under the laws of the land.
You made grave error by giving away some personal information. Play it smart and don't fall for any pressure tactics.
Act only if there is genuine debt and only after you receive a legit debt validation notice.
------------------------------------------------
The calls from AFS Legal Services have been reported as scam. The calls are being made by criminals who run call centers on foreign shores, impersonating law firms or debt collectors, with the sole objective of defrauding law-abiding, taxpaying Americans.
Their empty threats of serving, arrest, legal action etc should be dealt with the contempt they deserve.
DON’T get fooled by CALLER ID which may display a LOCAL AMERICAN NUMBER. Scammers call using VOIP and they are able to change the caller ID, to any number that they wish to display.
The best way to stop these scam calls is to be aggressive and tell the caller you are aware of the scam and the calls have already been reported to the police and the calls are being taped. Be strong and talk to them with authority and force.
Don’t leave them, if they call again. Scammers, THEY deserve to be cussed out. It can’t be the other way. Let’s not be gentle anymore. Treat fraudsters with a string of expletives laced with verbal venom.
