Free Reward offers come attached with a variety of scams. The ‘Free Card’ would require user to pay shipping and handling, using a credit card which is a ruse to steal data and to fraudulently charge a much higher amount, than the promised S&H charges. The card may never arrive. And if it arrives at all, it will be worthless, since it won’t be accepted by any major retailer.
In another version, the scammer would sign up the victim, for Magazine or digital content subscriptions which have to be cancelled by the victim within a month. Victims being unaware that they have been signed in for subscription (using the credit card info given for making payment for shipping), will miss the deadline to cancel.
Victims are often directed to a phishing website where the his / her login credentials and other personal info are stolen.
A call center in Philippines running this scam was shut down by the police. According to this report “call center agents would call customers in the US and ask them to buy a registration card, which would cost $2.99 excluding processing fees in exchange for $100 gift card vouchers for all gasoline stations in the US, gift cards exclusive for Wallmark Grocery, and other freebies.
After the customers bought the cards through credit cards, the call center agents would no longer communicate with them.”
