Tech Support Scam
Don’t ever give-in to bogus debt collectors who are looking to coerce cash. Debt collectors are legally bound to send Debt Validation Notice of the debt by mail within 5 days of their first call. Those who call and threaten legal action are hoodlums looking for pain free income, if they can’t even send you a notice.
The fact is they can’t since they have no information aside from your phone number and may be name and a couple of other stolen data.
The callers are most likely scammers, posing as Debt Collectors, calling or contacting you without disclosing that they are debt collectors & trying to collect a debt.
The reason the scammers ask to call back is to allow the matter to sink in, creating confusion and tension in the potential victim.
The weak could get easily stressed & lose their ability to remain cool and the scammer will drive the screw deeper, eventually getting the victim to shell out money.
Debt collectors violate the FDCPA when:
1. Calling or contacting you without disclosing that they are debt collectors trying to collect a debt
2. Pretending to work for a government agency
3. Threatening to have you arrested or jailed
4. Making empty threats to scare you
So be cool! Don't share any personal info including name, address etc
